Timber framing is the ancient art of joining timbers with carefully crafted mortises, tenons, and pegs to create structure. With the advent of the drawn wire nail, faster sawmills, and America’s rapid growth, lightweight stick framing gradually replaced timber framing in the early 1900s. In recent decades renewed appreciation for craft and quality has led to a timber framing renaissance. Unlike light stick framing, the timber frame is usually left exposed inside the home and can include naturally curved, forked and fully round pieces which, like the heavy timbers themselves, connect the frame to the trees from which it was made. There is a feeling of security one gets walking into a timber frame, as the structure is evident and strong, and the joinery provides visible testament to human skill and caring.
